Vision and Values including British Values

Our Vision and Values

Stoberry Park School is committed to all children becoming independent learners who are creative and aspirational.

Through our Growth Mindset approach, we prepare our pupils to thrive in a world of opportunities and challenges. Trying hard and taking risks with learning are at the heart of our school.

With determined effort and purposeful practice, we build knowledge, skills, and understanding.

Our school values are underpinned by strong partnerships between home, school and our community and together the dreams and futures of our pupils can be realised as they grow.

The exciting journey starts here.

Promoting British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • democracy
  • rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect
  • tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

The DfE have reinforced the need ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of Law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’

At Stoberry Park School we aim to weave these expectations across our curriculum and incorporate them into all we do.

High Expectations

In our school, we have high expectations for our roles in the learning process. Every learner is entitled to a curriculum rich and varied, challenging and inspiring which enables every individual to fulfill his or her potential to the highest possible standard; so that all, for the benefit of all, are able to shape their destinies.

Stoberry Focus: We aim to develop a Growth Mindset approach to learning

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Belief

We aim to develop knowledge to support the school in developing pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. We use assemblies, lesson time and visits to extend children’s knowledge and provide opportunities for them to experience diversity. This includes addressing prejudices and prejudice-based bullying.

British Value in focus: We understand and accept that our friends have different beliefs

The Rule of Law

Our curriculum provides opportunities for activities and visitors to support us in teaching the value and understanding of laws. These include links with the Fire Service and Community Police. Pupils are taught the importance of laws through assemblies, rules and through the school’s expectations of their behaviour and conduct. They learn about the importance of law in life beyond school.

British Value in focus: We understand that rules help us to be safe and happy

Mutual Respect

We aim to build an atmosphere of mutual respect. This is embedded in our assemblies and curriculum. Our core rules are explicit in teaching the importance of caring for each other and the environment whilst appreciating each other’s differences.

British Value in focus: We show respect and are kind to each other

Democracy

We value pupils’ opinions; we collect them by using our school council, pupil questionnaires, interviews, and less formal discussions. Their views directly influence our school improvement activities. Elections take place and our behaviour policy involves rewards chosen by pupils. Our environment is one where children are safe to disagree and can be confident in being heard.

British Value in focus: We contribute to help our school become better

Individual Liberty

Pupils learn about and understand rights and personal freedoms. Our PSHE curriculum and E-safety lessons teach them to make choices safely. Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices that affect their daily school lives, such as; ordering lunch and extra-curricular activities. The school provides an environment in which children can be empowered safely.

British Value in focus: We understand that there is freedom in our country to make choices
